Tips for Keeping Your Hands Healthy and Smooth

While, for many of us, it is important to take care of our skin, we sometimes neglect to take care of our hands. The skin on our hands is tough: it protects us, it warns us when something is too hot, and our hands help us to eat, dress, and move all day, every day. We touch so many different things every day; we shake strangers' hands, take public transportation, exchange money that others have been using for years. This isn't meant to gross you out, however, but rather, encourage you to take a look at your hands as important tools that need to be taken care of just as well as any other part of your body.

 


 

Here are some great ideas for protecting your hands and their skin:

 

✔ Drink lots of water. No surprise here, as this is my favourite tip for many different skincare concerns. Water is essential for the maintenance of healthy skin and hair. To read more about the benefits of water for your internal and external health, read our article on the topic.

✔ Exfoliate! Just like your face, your hands produce dead skin cells that need to be removed so that the fresh skin underneath can glow. ✔ Wear sunscreen. Yep, we recommend that you apply sunscreen on your hands. While your hands might not be directly under the sun, it's important to prevent long-term sun damage, such as the discoloured spots that can develop with age. 

✔ Wear gloves. We don't recommend wearing gloves in the summer, of course, but in cold weather, your hands will be well-insulated and protected from the harsh, dry hair if they're bundled into a pair of gloves. ✔ Wear rubber gloves. We suggest that you don rubber gloves if you wash dishes manually, handle cleaning chemicals and/or detergents, or if you're planning to touch something that might not be safe for your hands. This way, your hands will stay protected from any harsh ingredients that aren't suitable for skin.  

✔ Get regular manicures. Go to the nail salon once or twice a month and get your nails done. If you don't want an entire manicure, opt for a polish change instead. ✔ Dry your hands thoroughly after washing. Make sure that there is no trace of water left, otherwise they'll dry out. It's best to seal the moisture in your hands as soon as you wash them.
