Let’s take a look at the first step of our skincare routine: cleansing, perhaps the most important and critical step! You cannot take care of your skin properly without cleansing it because you need to remove makeup, excess oils, and the daily build-up of grime and impurities from the surface of your skin in order to properly treat and condition it. The cleaner your face is, the better it will absorb the luxurious products you apply to it afterwards, such as your serum and moisturizer. If you aren’t already double cleansing, we suggest you start now, as the double cleansing method has been proven to be the most efficient way to ensure that your skin is makeup-free, clean, and primed for other nightly products.
Double cleansing is exactly what it sounds like. You clean your face twice. We don’t recommend that you use two identical cleansing methods, however. Instead, we suggest that you select two different products that are targeted specifically for the first and second steps in your cleansing routine. As the two steps actually have different purposes for your skin, it is best to use products that will maximize that step to its cleansing potential.

The popular double cleansing method comes from Japan, where it is considered to be a staple in a proper skincare routine. Japanese women consider ‘cleansing’ and ‘washing’ your face to be two separate steps. Traditionally, the (1) cleansing step would refer to the makeup removal process, while the (2) washing step refers to actually ‘cleaning’ the face. As Japanese women are respected for their skincare products and methods, it cannot be denied that they must be on to something with this double cleansing step in their routine.
How exactly do you double cleanse? Luckily, it’s not that complicated! The first step is to use a cleanser that will do an efficient job of removing your makeup. We suggest that you use a cleansing oil; add two to four pumps of the oil to your fingers, massage it onto your face, and then rinse off. You can also use a cleansing balm, which is applied to your face with a cream-like consistency, a micellar water (applied with a soaked cotton pad) or cleansing wipes (especially if you're traveling or at the gym). If you have naturally oily skin and don’t want to use a cleansing oil or balm, try a cleansing milk instead, which has a much lighter formula.
Step two. After removing your makeup, apply a cleanser to your face that will really clean your skin. We suggest that you use favourite cleanser, as there is no 'ideal' for this step! For an extra exfoliating effect, use a konjac sponge, muslin cloth, or cleansing tool (such as a Clarisonic) to make sure that the cleanser reaches every inch of your face, and every last one of your pores and removes all excess dirt that you may have missed the first time around. Lastly, pat your face dry and then go ahead and tone, apply your serum, and moisturize!
What can you expect? Women who cleanse their skin twice can expect to notice results from anti-aging products much faster than those who don't. Their complexions will also appear brighter, and their skin will be softer, especially since they are able to absorb their restorative night-time products better. It is also possible that you'll notice less acne breakouts, diminished acne scars, and a reduction of the little white bumps that sometimes pop up from under the surface of your skin.
Here are some suggestions for products to add to your double cleansing routine:
Remember, makeup products are now formulated for their staying power, which means they're harder than ever to remove. That's why you must always remove your make up as a separate step from cleaning your face.
